Assessment report of the effectiveness governance strategies and approaches to combat marine plastic litter and microplastics by UN Environment

UN Environment circulated an updated version of the assessment report of the effectiveness of relevant international, regional and subregional governance strategies and approaches to combat marine plastic litter and microplastics. The report provided a detailed mapping, gaps & trend analysis, cost of damage and remediation. Based on all these analysis, the report proposed 3 options to improved governance strategies and approaches to combat marine plastic litter and microplastics, i.e.:

Option 1: Maintaining the Status Quo,

Option 2: Review and revise existing frameworks, and

Option 3: A new global architecture with a multi-layered governance approach.

Under the mandate from UN Environment Assembly 3 resolution, the first Ad Hoc Open Ended Expert Group meeting on marine litter and microplastics will convene in UN Environment headquarter in Nairobi, Kenya end of this month. This report serves as an information document for this meeting and is highly recommended to audiences with an interest in plastic pollution problem and governance on different level.

Association 3 Herissons will keep an eye on the progress of plastic discussion, and we look forward to physically attending these meetings in the near future.
